Most of the toys I made from 1987 -90 were
concieved and designed whilst on the Creative Crafts course at the London
College of Furniture. Woodturning featured in many of the designs as a
speedy and efficient way of reproducing the same shape. The most successful
toy in terms of sales was the waddling penguins. This was based on a design
found by Ron Fuller in Nuremberg of three ducks whose webbed feet were
loosely pinned to 'skis'. The resulting waddling action when these skis were
'walked' really appealed to me and I used dowel pegs on the skis and a
corresponding oversize hole on the underside of a penguin. This allowed the
penguin to be removed and played with separately.
